DevOps Terraform Coach (AWS/Azure) — Infrastructure-as-Code Standardization

Are you a Terraform migration expert with a knack for coaching teams and driving infrastructure-as-code adoption? We’re looking for a DevOps leader who can standardize cloud environments, streamline operations, and empower teams to build self-sufficient solutions. If you thrive on AWS/Azure architecture, day-0 to day-2 operations, and delivering code-driven infrastructure, this is your chance to make a lasting impact.

Join us in a remote coaching role (Dallas or Seattle preferred, PST/CST time zones) and help transform how enterprise teams manage their cloud infrastructure. Immediate start, 6-month engagement with extensions!

Requirements:

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Proven experience migrating to Terraform from mixed environments (AWS/Azure; scripted and GUI-built), including:
    • Importing existing resources (terraform import), module refactoring, and state management.
    • Designing module libraries and standardized workflows at scale.
  • Deep expertise in AWS and Azure services and core infrastructure (networking, compute, storage, IAM/Identity).
  • Strong grasp of day-0, day-1, day-2 operations for IaC and cloud platforms.
  • Ability to develop code and procedures that make teams self-sufficient (modules, pipelines, policy, runbooks).
  • Experience preparing operational handoffs with no loss of capability (documentation, training, support models).
  • Skill in evaluating team maturity and implementing tailored enablement plans.
  • Demonstrated design and implementation experience (reference architectures, guardrails, governance).
  • Excellent communication and coaching skills; client-presentable and comfortable leading workshops.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience with multi-cloud patterns and hybrid setups.
  • Familiarity with policy as code (OPA, Sentinel), secret management (Vault, Key Vault, Secrets Manager).
  • CI/CD for IaC (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps Pipelines, CircleCI).
  • Observability tooling (CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Prometheus/Grafana).
  • Security & compliance frameworks (CIS benchmarks, NIST, ISO) applied to cloud/IaC.
  • Prior consulting/enablement experience with large enterprises.

Success Metrics (What Good Looks Like)

  • % of infrastructure codified in Terraform across teams.
  • Adoption of standardized modules and approved patterns.
  • Reduced config drift and time-to-provision for new environments.
  • Teams operating independently with clear runbooks and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Positive team feedback on coaching and enablement; measurable maturity uplift.

Responsibilities:

  • Terraform Standardization & Migration
    • Assess current AWS/Azure infrastructure (scripted & GUI-built) and define paths to Terraform.
    • Design target state modules, workspaces, and pipelines; migrate resources to Terraform safely.
    • Introduce guardrails: state management, versioning, module registries, policy as code (e.g., Sentinel/Open Policy Agent).

  • Coaching & Enablement
    • Coach teams through the migration lifecycle—day-0 (planning/provisioning), day-1 (configuration/onboarding), day-2 (operations/changes).
    • Run workshops, pair-programming sessions, and office hours; document patterns and playbooks.

  • Design & Implementation
    • Create reusable Terraform modules and reference architectures for AWS and Azure.
    • Establish CI/CD workflows (e.g., GitHub Actions/Azure DevOps) for IaC deployments.
    • Define environments, naming conventions, tagging strategies, and secrets management.

  • Operational Readiness & Handoff
    • Develop runbooks, SOPs, and automation to ensure teams are self-sufficient post-handoff.
    • Confirm monitoring, logging, alerting, backups, drift detection, and remediation are in place.

  • Assessment & Tailored Plans
    • Evaluate team maturity; build customized migration roadmaps with milestones, KPIs, and quality gates.
    • Identify risks, dependencies, and remediation strategies; report progress to stakeholders.
